A community committed to sexual violence prevention
Amara Relf
Equality and Liberation Officer, Leeds University Union

Change happens when we all take responsibility in fostering a safer and more respectful environment.
Leeds University Union (LUU) is the heartbeat of campus, where a vibrant community of students and staff come together to offer support, campaign for positive change and help create a safer environment for students. Among these impactful initiatives, LUU is helping raise awareness of sexual violence and how it impacts people's lives across the University.
LUU are working closely with University staff and students to tackle sexual violence and create safer, more inclusive spaces across campus. Amara Relf, Equality and Liberation Student Executive Officer has been a key figure in championing these initiatives.
My passion for sexual violence prevention stems from witnessing the impact that education and advocacy can have in changing attitudes and behaviours.
Amara’s experience with sexual violence prevention started during her undergraduate studies where she examined why inequality for women and girls persists despite laws promoting equality. Research she undertook during her studies highlighted gaps between laws and real-life experiences, igniting her interest. Amara deepened her understanding of how societal norms and language uphold and normalise gender-based violence and discrimination, through her Masters in Law and Social Justice.
Since taking up her role in LUU, Amara has prioritised sexual violence prevention initiatives including stewarding the Reclaim the Night march in Leeds and ensuring the implementation of anti-spiking tools across all LUU venues.
Knowing that my work contributes to creating a safer environment for students—and seeing the positive response from the community—continues to motivate me every day.
Amara’s current focus is on supporting Students against Sexual Harassment and Assault (SASHA) in the creation of consent and active bystander training for clubs and societies. This aims to equip student groups with the knowledge and tools to foster a culture of respect and accountability within their communities.
Small actions, like challenging harmful behaviours and having open conversations, can make a big difference.
Although Amara’s work is focused within LUU, she strongly encourages the wider Leeds community to support sexual violence prevention by actively engaging with the initiatives that they run. Whether it’s attending training sessions, spreading awareness, or championing a culture of respect in your own circles; there’s something that everyone can contribute.
Collective effort is key to making lasting change.
Amara and Leeds University Union’s work is an invaluable part of supporting sexual violence prevention.
Amara passionately believes that staying informed, speaking up, and supporting each other are vitals steps in showing up against sexual violence. Whilst it can take time, change happens when we all take responsibility in fostering a safer and more respectful environment. If you’re a student at Leeds, get involved and help make positive change.
