Samiha Mohd Salleh (TESOL 1994)
All that I have learned — I loved it.
The University of Leeds holds a special place in my heart, marking one of the most memorable chapters of my life. Between 1992 and 1994, I pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in TESOL, Primary Education, and those years remain etched in my memory as transformative and enriching — second only to the profound experience of performing my Hajj in 2015.
My time at Leeds was filled with invaluable lessons and discoveries that shaped not only my career as an educator but also my perspective on life. The knowledge imparted by the exceptional lecturers at the University of Leeds was indescribable. Their dedication, wisdom, and guidance left an indelible mark on me, inspiring my lifelong commitment to teaching and learning.
The University of Leeds is always in my heart. How I wish I could revisit the University, especially the School of Education. It is likely that many of my beloved lecturers have moved on—Ms. Jennifer Jarvis, Dr. Lynne Cameron, Dr. David Taylor, Dr. David Hayes, and a few more whose names I can’t recall. I took the opportunity to stay back for our graduation day; only four of us remained, while the rest returned to Malaysia earlier. I felt that this was my only chance to experience graduation day at the University, and it became one of the most treasured moments of my life.
I still vividly recall the vibrant campus life — the iconic Brotherton Library, where countless hours were spent immersed in books; the infirmary that stood as a reassuring presence; and the bustling cafeteria where friendships were forged over shared meals. The simplicity of everyday moments, such as taking the Metro bus around Leeds or shopping for groceries at Morrisons, brought a sense of belonging and joy. Experiencing the four seasons was unbelievable. The blooming flowers of spring, the long days of summer, and the magical snowfall of winter were unforgettable.
My children loved the experience, and when they attended school there, they blended seamlessly with the local children, adapting effortlessly to their new environment. There was even a time when I felt an overwhelming desire to stay in Leeds, captivated by its charm and the enriching academic environment. However, my bond with the Malaysian Ministry of Education called me back to fulfil my commitment, ensuring that I could bring the knowledge and experiences I gained back home to benefit others.
I hope that the University of Leeds will continue to thrive and achieve even greater heights, becoming one of the most prestigious universities, particularly in the field of education. The University of Leeds was more than an institution to me; it was a place of growth, exploration, and unforgettable memories. As we celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Snake — symbolizing wisdom and intelligence — I reflect on the profound impact my time at Leeds has had on my journey. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that continues to inspire me to this day. Thank you!
Raphipatr Chaopaknam (International Business Law 2016)
The University offered me with practical syllabus, and I have been applying what I have studied at the University in my work. Additionally, there were many interesting activities for me as a foreign student to participate in and the city is lovely.
Friendly and professional faculty staff, a great facility and a chance to be in a beautiful city.
Yutong Gao (MA Advertising and Marketing 2022)
My time at the University of Leeds was nothing short of perfect. The academic journey there was a remarkable one. The curriculum was comprehensive, covering a wide range of courses that delved deep into my field of study. Each class was a chance to expand my knowledge, with professors who were not only highly knowledgeable in their respective areas but also incredibly passionate about teaching. They encouraged in-depth discussions, challenged us to think critically, and provided valuable insights that helped me gain a solid understanding of my major.
In addition to the academic knowledge, I was also able to build a rich professional network. Through group projects, seminars, and academic events, I had the opportunity to interact with fellow students who were as eager to learn and grow as I was. These connections were not only limited to the classroom but extended to future career prospects. We shared ideas, supported each other, and many of these relationships have continued to be valuable resources even after leaving the University.
Beyond the campus, Leeds itself was a city that I quickly grew to love. The urban planning was excellent, with modern infrastructure coexisting harmoniously with historical architecture. The city center was vibrant, filled with a diverse range of shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. Whether it was exploring the local markets, visiting museums, or simply strolling along the beautiful riverbanks, there was always something to do. The public transportation system was efficient, making it easy to get around and explore different parts of the city.
Now that I have returned to my home country, I often find myself reminiscing about my days in Leeds. The memories of the bustling campus, the stimulating academic discussions, and the charm of the city all come flooding back. Those years at the University of Leeds have left an indelible mark on me, and I am truly grateful for the experience that has shaped me both academically and personally.

Best atmosphere, best labs and facilities
The University of Leeds (UoL) truly stands out because of its exceptional lecturers, who are both accessible and responsive. Whether it’s for academic support or personal matters, having a personal tutor available for guidance made a significant difference in my experience. In terms of research, UoL also offers some of the best topics. During my capstone project, I had the chance to fully immerse myself in a research pipeline, which was an incredible learning experience. The support I received from both postgraduate students and lecturers was invaluable, and it made the entire research process both enriching and enjoyable. Leeds provides the perfect environment for studying. The University campus itself gives off such a calm, positive vibe, which makes it a place where I genuinely enjoy spending time. It’s a balance of a productive atmosphere and a place of peace — truly an ideal space for learning and personal growth.

Paul Lim (Accounting and Data Processing 1982)
It was the location and reputation of the University of Leeds. I didn't want to be in or near London nor too far north (too cold!) and Leeds' location near the Yorkshire moors was attractive. It was also a chance to get to know a different culture and I'd heard folks are super friendly and down-to-earth and they are!
I believe reputation is always important and the University of Leeds is well established and has a good reputation worldwide. The location is also an important consideration and Leeds is not too crowded nor too commercialized and sits in a truly beautiful part of England with a lovely warm and friendly culture. I love that it's in the middle of the country, with easy access to both London and the enchanting Lake District.
Aisya (MA Arabic/English Translation 2018)

I loved how the profs inspired us to think out of the box. As an Asian student, I was taught to follow the rules and never question what others say. But during my time at Leeds, I was encouraged to challenge and think critically of other people's views. This was really life-changing.
It offers world class education and some of the profs are renowned figures in their fields, but the living cost here is not as high as other cities.
