A SPACE FOR INNOVATION

Automatic doors swing open, inviting you inside. There is no reception desk, and nobody asks whether you should be here. Instead, you can stroll along to your pre-booked media suite – a professional studio for high-quality filming and editing or straight into a sound-proofed podcast booth.

You are free to explore at your leisure. And that, explains Senior Community Development Manager Kerr Hunter, is the point: “There are no barriers here,” says Kerr. “You could come in to use the 3D printers in our makerspace, but you might then see students using the virtual reality headset and might want to find out what that's all about. We’re open access, and that encourages users to speak to one another and truly explore.

"It’s an opportunity to try what you’ve never tried before.”

Kerr is responsible for building a staff and student community in HELIX. Since opening 18 months ago, registered users have risen to over 3,000. They include external businesses, alumni, students, academics and, of course, scholars from the University’s business start-up service, Spark.

A dedicated space is available for Spark entrepreneurs, past and present, meaning they always have somewhere to collaborate and test ideas. “They can try anything here," Kerr says. "They also have 3D printers, laser cutters, textiles equipment and craft resources at their disposal."

Meet two Spark scholars who have benefitted from the dedicated space for entrepreneurship on campus.

Emily Youd (Third year Fashion Marketing)

My business is called...

Emily Elizabeth’s, an Etsy and Depop shop selling handmade novelty accessories, gifts, and merchandise.

I use HELIX for…

trialling and testing new products. I’ve used the 3D printers, the sewing machines and the heat press. I attend the regular workshops and events, and I love coming along to the quiet, calming workspaces and study rooms.

The most powerful thing about HELIX is…

being amongst likeminded people. I know that when I walk in there, everyone I see has entrepreneurial ideas and spirit, and I feel like I belong.

Thanks to HELIX, I’ve…

prototyped more technical products, learnt new business skills, and I’ve been more creative. When I face challenges with my business, I go to HELIX to remind myself of the possibilities and feel inspired again.

Sol Harter (Music, Multimedia and Electronics 2023)

My business is called...

Ohr Labs, which I founded with Frank Plowman (Electronic Engineering 2024). We're an audio and audio-tech start-up which engineers and manufactures always-on, desktop decibel meters to protect musicians' hearing.

We use HELIX for…

the 3D printing facilities to develop and quickly iterate
on prototype devices. We regularly use the laser cutter to manufacture parts, alongside the media facilities for product photography and content creation.

The most powerful thing about HELIX is…

the ease of access and the incredible people who work there. You can walk in with an idea and leave with a prototype the same day, with expert advice always on hand.

Thanks to HELIX, we’ve…

been able to rapidly develop our product – from early prototypes to a full launch in under a year. The business workshops on topics such as marketing and IP protection have been crucial in helping us establish and grow as a new product-based business.
