爆竹声中一岁除，春风送暖入屠苏。祝大家新年快乐！万事胜意！心想事成！

今年的春节很有可能和往年有所不同。今年我很有可能在自己的小家过新年。往年这个时候，我们全家人会团聚在一起去姥姥家过节。年三十的晚上一起准备食物，包饺子，观看春晚。窗外的鞭炮和春晚节目的声音共同构成了过年氛围。我们会边看春晚边吃饺子，饺子里放各种各样的馅，有肉馅，糖饺子，还有一些稀奇古怪的内馅比如红枣，栗子，甚至还有硬币！硬币经清洗消毒，放入饺子馅中取其发财的寓意。谁吃到的钱饺子最多还有额外奖励，所以家里的小朋友们为了获得那额外的奖励往往会多吃几个饺子，直到撑到不会走路。农历新年对于中国人来说是一年中最重要的时刻，其意义远超其余节日，因为每当这时，在各地为生计奔波的家人们会回到自己的家乡和自己的亲人们团聚在一起，享受这难得的温情时光。因为过完年大家又要各奔东西忙自己的事情了。一年到头真正闲下来和家人们坐在一起聊聊天，互相陪伴的日子可能就只有这么几天。

接下来说说我在春节最喜欢干的事情，现在作为家庭的主力成员，年终大席缺不了我的帮助，我会和母亲们一起在厨房为大家准备美味的饭菜，看到最后自己做的菜被一扫而光是作为厨师的幸福。而到了晚上，周围就开始噼里啪啦的鞭炮声。我会和家里胆子最大的姨夫一起去放鞭炮和烟花，而我往往都是那个看客，看到漫天的各式各样烟花也会发出哇的赞叹。放挂鞭则是更有挑战性，因为挂鞭往往声势浩大，火光四射，看的人是心惊胆战，但我又爱凑热闹。所以这时我往往会躲在远处捂着耳朵，眼睛却一直盯着挂鞭的燃放。祝大家新年快乐！

Tell us more about how you are celebrating this year. What do you like most about this time of year? What are your favourite traditions?
1. Dust sweeping: The first thing to welcome the New Year is to get rid of the old. Dust sweeping is the year-end general cleaning. In my home we will get it ready one week before the New Year’s Eve.
2. Inverted Fu character: in China, people often use a "fu" character to express the yearning and pursuit of fortune and happiness. Inverted Fu character represents the arrival of fortune, which I always find very interesting.
3. New Year's Day temple to worship Buddha. My hometown Luoyang has the famous ancient White Horse Temple, my uncle is a devout believer, every year the first day of the Spring Festival he will get up early to queue up to go to the temple vow, pray for a happy life this year and bless the health of the family.

During Lunar New Year holiday, we just spend more time with family, visit relatives and organise family gatherings. What I like most is I can see some relatives during the holiday, since we all quite busy all the year around, and I work and live in Shanghai where it’s far away from my hometown. Normally, during this time, family go to the market for buying groceries and cook together, the elderly give red envelopes to the youths. Besides, we also express good wishes to each other, hoping everyone gets better in the New Year!

My favourite part of Lunar New Year is the red envelopes (“hong bao” in Mandarin). Normally, the red envelopes filled with money are typically only given to children or unmarried adults with no job. After working, I began to give red envelopes to my nephews and nieces. I feel delighted to do so. The Chinese New Year’s Eve meal is another interesting part, it is the most important dinner of the year. This year my relatives working in other cities will gather together to have this family reunion. How wonderful!

Last year I spent Chinese New Year alone in my studio in the UK, but this year I am back home and can enjoy it with my family. I love spending time with my family chatting and drinking tea. It makes me feel incredibly relaxed and sometimes I learn some life experience from the conversation. My favourite traditional activity is dumpling making. We have a unique activity in our family where we hide a dumpling with a different flavour, probably sweet. If it is eaten by someone in the family, he or she will be the luckiest person this year! I would stay in the UK and celebrate the Lunar New Year with my friends. And this year, as usual, I would prepare a whole traditional big meal menu and recipe. You know, in China, every number has its specific meaning. So, we have to prepare dinner for 6, 8, 9 or 10 dishes. The traditional show in CCTV 1 also needs to be on the table with dinner. But most of us do not watch it, haha. We just played it and listened to it because the sound from this show related to too many emotional connections. And my favourite tradition is the lucky money! Every province has their own rules. For example, in the province where I grew up, you could always get the lucky money if you are not married!

I am going to travel in the Lunar year. As my Chinese zodiac sign is Rabbit, it is gonna be a very meaningful year but also challenging one. As for the traditions, we often spend the Spring Festival together at home and enjoy the feast. Also, according to the soothsaying, people in their own Ben Ming Nian may offend “Taisui”, also called the God of Age. Most popular solution is wearing red underwear, socks or waist belts given by elders, for red is believed to bring them good luck. I think ending the three-year epidemic and start a brand new year is the most worthy of celebration. I can finally get back to my normal job.

So we are so glad to see each other again in Beijing to celebrate this Lunar New Year. We joined a party then met a lot of people from Germany, UK, Italy and so on. That day I felt like I came back to the UK and I really miss it. I believe I will go back to the UK for a PHD, working or traveling.

A long winter holiday with my family is my favourite. The most interesting traditions are a series of celebrations different from one village to another. We watch the parades, the local drama, all kinds of local foods (no jiaozi here) and how the local people worship our gods.
