Our alumni stars in Africa
Thank you to all our fabulous alumni in, or from, Africa who have sent us their news. We heard from so many of you that we've shared stories on these pages throughout Africa Week. Here's our third group of alumni representing Leeds in countries across Africa.

Botswana
Thuso Mogotsi (Mining Engineering 1995, Dip Engineering Geology 2008)
Thuso is the Head of Mining at the Debswana Diamond Company. Thuso is responsible for the strategic planning of the Debswana resources in the short- to long-term.
Cameroon and DR Congo
Christian Ngang (MEng Water Sanitation and Health Engineering 2019)
Christian is an Infrastructure and WASH Advisor at Medair and Inter-governmental Organisations. Christian is the Founder and CEO of Research and Development Without Borders, Cameroon.
Egypt
Norhan Mahmoud (Translation Studies 2018)
Norhan is the Founder of Meraki Cultural Consulting.

Ghana
Isaac Owusu (MA Disability Studies 2011)
Isaac is a Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology where he teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Disability and Rehabilitation Studies.
Isaac Annan (PhD Law 2014)
Isaac is Director of Human Rights at the Parliament of Ghana and former of Director and Chief Investigator of Human Rights at Ghana's Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for the Parliament of Ghana. He has consulted for and served on many human rights organisations. He held a fellowship with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Kenya
Anthony Kioko (MSc Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energy Systems 2017)
Anthony is Charging Infrastructure Deployment Manager at BasiGo Limited.. BasiGo is making safe, clean transport accessible to all people in Africa by seeking to revolutionise the 100% electric bus experience for owners and passengers. This solution addresses a key global challenge by doing away with the use of fossil fuels in public transport in Africa.
Elvis Omwega (BSc Economics and Finance 2018)
Elvis is a Lead Data Scientist with Uno Fintech Company and GLEAC. Elvis is a Consultant in Data Science and AI solutions for finance.
Shiru Wanyoike (Masters in CCMPR 2017)
Shiru is a Corporate Communications Consultant at Brand Integrated Consulting. She is a communication and marketing consultant with more than 15 years of corporate communications and marketing expertise. Collaborating with corporates, FMCGs, NGOs, SMEs, and professional services, she crafts impactful brands that resonate with target audiences.
Evidence Nyamadzawo (MA Applied & Professional Ethics 2019)
Evidence is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Registrar at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital. He also works with the Health Technology Assessment Capacity Development in Africa.
Pauline Akolo (MA Communication and Media Studies 2017)
Pauline is a Communication Expert at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations who has worked in communications in different establishments on the continent under diverse social, political and cultural contexts.
With her solid understanding of International Development Communications, Pauline uses corporate communications to drive change. Having driven communication processes in different development institutions – including a multilateral development bank, an INGO, and media – she is well versed with development strategy and programming, research and policy.
Liberia
Mohammed Ali (Water, Sanitation and Health Engineering 2014)
Mohammed is the Managing Director of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, which is responsible for providing water and sewage services to urban centres and communities that have population of 5,000 and more.
Libya
Martin Longden CMG OBE (History 1994, MA 1996, PhD 2000)
Martin is the UK Ambassador to Libya.
Malawi
Ronald Gundamtengo (MSc Environment Engineering and Project Management 2010)
As a Projects Manager for the Lilongwe Water Board, Ronald plans, designs and manages infrastructure investments for water and sewerage services for Lilongwe City.
Mauritius
Anil Mohith (MBChB 1987)
Anil is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Wellkin Hospital and former National Cancer Control Coordinator for the Ministry of Health Mauritius. Anil has an interest in innovative therapy for solid and haematological cancers.
Mozambique
Andrew Johnson (BSc Mining 1974)
Andrew is a mine manager at Minas Moatize Lda. After graduating from Leeds, Andrew worked underground in the Lancashire Collieries (Pits) and became an Undermanager at Parsonage Colliery in Leigh, Lancashire.
In 1978 he was employed by Anglo American Coal to help develop their collieries in South Africa. He and his wife emigrated in 1979 to Witbank (now Emalahleni, or place of coal, in Ndebele) to work on their new mine. They intended to return to the UK in five years. It is now 2024 and they are still in Africa. He is based in South Africa but managing a coal mine in Mozambique and has also spent time in Angola mining diamonds.
Namibia
Bufelo Lushetile (MSc Exploration Geophysics 2013)
Bufelo is the Deputy Director of Geophysics at the Geological Survey of Namibia. Bufelo manages and coordinates operational, budgetary and financial activities of the Geophysics division and liaises with other government institutions and stakeholders. Bufelo provides technical inputs and research on geophysical methods including earthquake seismology, airborne and ground geophysical data.

Nigeria
Wole Soyinka (English 1957, Hon DLitt 1973)
Wole Soyinka is an acclaimed playwright, poet, novelist and essayist who has many awards, including the Nobel prize for literature.
Usman Gulma (PhD Geography 2018)
Since graduation, Usman rose to the rank of chief lecturer and was promoted the position of Deputy Provost, Academics, at the Adamu Augie College of Education.
Tajudeen Ahmed (MBA 2007)
Tajudeen is the General Manager and Group Head of Business Development at BUA Group. He superintended the process that led to the presidential approval of a 2.4-hectare Free Trade Zone, from where two major products of the company are manufactured, with potential for creating 1,300 new jobs. He was a key member of the team that worked towards a merger of five subsidiaries of the Group, which manufactured sugar, flour, pasta, rice, and edible oils, into one business entity that was listed on the Nigerian Exchange.
Oghenerukevwe Disi-Okorogri (MScEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering 2019)
As a Material Requirement Planner at Nestle Nigeria, Oghenerukevwe helps Nestle secure all materials (local and imported) needed for production at all four factories in Nigeria, while facing a turbulent economy.
Audu Dakas (PhD Civil Engineering 2014)
Starting as a graduate assistant, Auda has risen to the rank of a professor at the University of Jos with more than 20 publications in learned journals, both local and international. Auda has mentored junior academicians who are PhD holders and professors, been involved in internal and external examination of candidates across levels (undergraduate, Masters and PhD), as well as quality assurance, and many community services.
Senegal
Hyacinthe Faye (MA Global Development and Africa 2020)
Hyacinthe is Secretary General at Target. Since its creation in 2021, the association has helped to design several projects that have contributed to improving the living conditions of local communities, particularly in rural areas.
Sierra Leone
Michael Jaigah (MSc Eng Transport Planning and Engineering 2018)
Michael is Director of Traffic Safety and Engineering at the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority and has helped to introduce road safety audits, design of safer roads, post crash centres and drivers training programmes, amongst other projects.
South Africa
Michael Glencross (BSc 1961)
Michael is retired but still teaches high school mathematics online to a few students. When he lived in Zimbabwe, he taught mathematics at high school, The Teachers' College, Bulawayo and the University of Zimbabwe. Since moving to South Africa, Michael taught at the University of the Witwatersrand, University of South Africa, Walter Sisulu University of Science and Technology and St Augustine College of South Africa. He is a Professor Emeritus of the Walter Sisulu University of Science and Technology.
Cheryl Wagner (BA Hons History 1988)
As the Chairperson, BHCC - Hospital and Clinic Outreach, Cheryl chairs a team of people who raise funds and provide outreach to patients attending public health clinics and hospitals.
Sudan
Khalid Elbeely (PhD Politics and International Studies 2003)
Khalid is a Full Professor at Sudan University of Science and Technology, College of Business Studies, Economics Department. Khalid was the Dean of College of Business Studies 2010 to 2014, Editor in Chief for Economics and Management Journal, Sudan University of Science and Technology since 2013 to present .
Tanzania
Peter Masolwa, (MSc Economics and Finance 2018)
Peter is an Economist at the Ministry of Finance where he manages a World Bank and IMF portfolio. He mobilises (external resources) grants and concessional loans/credit from Development Partners for implementation of the Government budget and strategic development projects in Tanzania that are geared towards poverty reduction and ensure shared prosperity. He also coordinates engagements between the Government of Tanzania and Africa Group I constituencies within the World Bank Group and IMF. This includes constituency meetings to ensure Tanzania’s and other constituency members’ interests are echoed and tabled for consideration by the Board of Executive Directors in the Bretton Woods Institutions.
Uganda
Eriab Nkamba (MA Dental Public Health 2005)
Eriab is a Senior Lecturer at Makerere University.
Muhindo Robert Bithi (MSc Engineering Environmental Engineering and Project Management 2012)
As a Senior Civil Engineer for the Bundibugyo District Local Government, Muhindo has supervised construction of Seed Secondary Schools, gravity water schemes and other related civil works.
Zambia
Chibunga Mupwaya (BA Hons Business Management 2021)
Chibunga is a Graduate Trainee at the Absa Bank Zambia Plc and has delivered high-quality credit reviews and applications for various entities, for a consolidated ticket value of ZMW607 million.
Zimbabwe
David Young (MA Business Economics 1992)
David is Managing Director of David Young (Pvt) Ltd. He worked in IT until 1998, then started his own business initially as an IT Project Manager. Today he is a Coach and Mentor to several managers and business owners in Zimbabwe and also an External Quality Assurer for ILM working with centres in South America, the Caribbean, South Africa and Zimbabwe. In 2017 at the age of 72 he climbed the highest mountain in Malaysia - Mt Kinabalu (4092 meters).
