What are you most proud of in your career so far?
When I started Rise Up Real Estate, it was a one man show. I was the business development manager, the sales person, the accountant, the legal, the administrator, the marketing specialist, and if required, the office boy too! We soon grew, and after being recognised by the largest local news publication in UAE, Gulf News, and Khaleej Times, I got invited to the STEP conference in Dublin to speak on the panel and showcase our technology. That led to events in Beirut, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia where I pitched the platform to a crowd of over 3,000 attendees. I received awards in Dubai from developers such as Azizi Developments and Sobha. I was named in Forbes 50 UAE start-ups to watch.

I credit my success to my education in the UK because it taught me about diversity, and that has helped me immensely in my business. At Leeds, I was able to interact with fellow students from different backgrounds and culture, and make many great friends. Now, in just the same way, my business involves clients from every corner of the world.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
I know the road ahead seems uncertain, but don’t give up hope yet! We are a decade apart, you and I, and while I graduated into the post-recession era, the times ahead are more uncertain than they have ever been, but continue to practice, learn and improve your skills in your preferred fields or professions and everything else will fall in its place. So long as you enjoy what you do, your career will pave a path of its own.

I wanted to learn about new media platforms and Leeds gave me that. We learnt about coding, web designing and development, data scraping, analysis, visualisation, digital media research etc. My dissertation related to #MeToo and Indian media, covering issues related to salary differences, shift patterns, career changes, and leadership positions based on gender. The University of Leeds boosted my confidence to work independently and encouraged me to pursue the extremes of everything fearlessly and made me think professionally. The best part was it helped me develop thinking that's useful in society and taught me skills important for fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
While studying in Leeds, don't miss the opportunities to volunteer. It will help give you real-world experience and to develop new ideas, which in turn might help our societies grow sustainably. Also, don't forget to travel the different parts of UK to gain lifetime experiences and use them for the betterment of society.

I came to Leeds to pursue a second master's in a subject loved: British and European medieval history. I received a full scholarship and had a wonderful and productive time. I've since returned to India and now write children's books on medieval and modern Indian history. Children's books on British history were what sparked my childhood love of and interest in the past and made me want to come to Leeds in the first place; I wanted to create books on India's incredibly diverse and fascinating history for children that are vigorously researched but also present history in a way that is fun, exciting and beautiful.

Upon completion of my post graduation from Leeds in 2016, I went back to India to take up a full time role at a leading MNC focusing on developing strategic communication for domestic and international clients. During my stint, we worked on a social awareness campaign sensitising key stakeholders to crimes against women, and received global recognition with several awards in the year. I am currently working with Mahindra Home Finance, one of India's largest NBFC's and top 30 Great Places to Work of 2022. I have been working towards a vital transformation in communications, content and social media.

I cannot give enough credit to Leeds in shaping my expertise, helping me to rediscover myself and hone skills that are vital for the workplace. My time at Leeds helped me feel secure enough to take on challenges with confidence and to learn and persevere. The exposure to different cultures and mindsets taught me to always learn from people and their experiences. At the same time, I also learnt about navigating and networking with people coming from various walks of life. Leeds helped me find my feet and empowered me to make a difference.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
Stay committed and true to yourself. This will help find the right kind of roles. If you want to make an impact and pursue a full-time role in communications then you must learn to understand/embed yourself into the business. Once you understand the business well yourself only then you can explain it to others. Keep abreast with the shifting trends in technology and the industry to stay relevant in the field and ensure that your client/organisation rides on the wave of any digital transformation. Last but not least, nurture a creative mindset. In a world where ideas get quickly adapted/replicated, you need to help your client/business find its own voice and style. Consistency and focus can help you build a stronger brand.

Leeds will always have a special place in my heart. The lectures and seminars were so beautifully put together by the brilliant academics of the law school, that I always looked forward to them. Even outside the classroom, speaking to the amazing lecturers, including Professor Peter Whelan, Professor Anna Lawson, Associate Professor Sam Lewis and Associate Professor Mitchell Travis, who were my favourites, was so enlightening. Interacting with the diverse community of peers from all over the world who had come together in my LLM cohort was always a delight. Rummaging through countless books for hours in the Parkinson building, attending the writing workshops, going to the 'shut up and write' sessions run in the library...it's all etched in my memory and has helped me gain knowledge, skills and experience in criminological thinking and research.

I am currently working as a lead business analyst, working on business transformation projects for utility companies. I graduated during the pandemic and being an international student with no previous experience, I struggled finding a job. Then I landed this role and began as a temp. My boss liked my work style and my data analysis skills, so helped me to get a permanent role. I got promoted to lead business analyst in six months. I think overcoming the struggle, landing the position and being a recognised member of the organisation is a personal achievement.

My job requires extensive data research and analysis, skills I refined at Leeds. The module assignments were really empirical that I still mention and relate them in my presentations (which makes me and the course sound so cool! Which it is!).
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
Start looking for opportunities earlier and don't postpone till the last minute. Always feel free to consult with your professors, they are always open to guide you and help you, but you have to make the first move. The University of Leeds has not only enriched me with subject matter knowledge, but it has also equipped me with the right skillset, to accomplish my goals in a short period of time. Leeds instilled in me the confidence to overcome all the challenges in life. It taught me to dream and my professors gave me wings to fly. Interacting with students on an international platform broadened my mindset and I was able to learn the best practices from every culture across the globe. The University not only quenched my thirst for knowledge but also helped me in discovering my hidden potential.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
My advice to the current cohort and the prospective students is to make the most of your time in Leeds and to dive into the vast ocean of opportunities that are offered by the University to the students. Pursuing a degree from Leeds is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Focus on acquiring in-depth knowledge through studies but also by participating in extra-curricular activities and by volunteering in and attending various networking events organized by the University. During the course of my studies in UK, I followed the golden mantra, “Do your best and a little more”.
A poem from Siddha:
With dreams in your eyes and faith in your heart,
Walk towards your destination even if the path seems hard.
No matter how difficult it seems,
But your determination would help you in achieving your dream.
Now is the time to take a step forward in your professional life,
With zeal and enthusiasm, you’ll achieve everything for what you’ll strive.
Take the path on which no one has ever travelled, don't question your abilities, and don't be timid,
Keep on travelling on it; you never know where it'll take you because for those who believe in themselves, even the sky has no limit!

I started my career in the public sector, straight out of school. I learned a lot on the job during the first few years and then got a bit stuck. The cushy comfort played a part, but even while I was working hard I did not feel fulfilled. I took a sabbatical and went to Leeds to do a Master's. Afterwards, I made the switch last year from the public sector to the private sector. It's been a year now, and I have taken to my current work like a fish to water. I am now heading the country marketing and communications of my organisation, and co-heading South Asia Marketing. I am the proudest of having been able to move on, adapt, and excel in my career at a time that seemed risky but has proven to be worth the risk.

Studying at Leeds helped me stand out from the competition when switching jobs at a time when the economy had crashed and the job market was tight. But there's more to it. My time at Leeds equipped me with the confidence I needed to be able to chase what I wanted in my career and grab opportunities when they presented themselves. I gained the kind of life experiences and personal skills that would help me be a better, more capable version of myself. This has in turn helped me perform better at work and excel.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
Try everything! Try every project that comes your way, every experience you can be a part of, every journey you can go on. The world is full of opportunities waiting for you to explore, and you never know where you'll uncover a new skill or find your next big life story. Say yes more often, but also know when to say no (and say it).

My biggest achievement personally is to have learned these two simple things which are the most important ingredient for success: 1. Kindness 2. Believe in doing rather than just thinking. Because there only two things that could happen, either you achieve your goal or you learn where you went wrong. Failure is never an outcome but a state of mind. I had my biggest achievement professionally when we grew our top line by almost 175%. With the pandemic we not only managed but grew the business and I believe that this is something to be proud-of!

My most important accomplishment throughout my university years was building cross-border experience across multiple engineering sectors. I was fortunate to have achieved placement experiences with Veolia, Allianz, Toyota Boshoku and Airbus across Dubai, France, Germany, UK and Japan. This not only boosted my soft skills but gave me precious experiences of different cultures, ways of working, inspirational individuals and self exploration. I believe this laid the foundation for my career after university and helped shape my route towards achieving my goals.

The Leeds experience promises more than just quality education and a world class library. Throughout my four years at Leeds, I had the chance to learn from qualified professors, take part in mentally and physically stimulating activities, engage in thought-provoking conversations, and make great friends along the way. These experiences helped me focus on my goals, learn from mistakes and work towards being the best version of myself. It is not only the knowledge we get access to but also our attitude towards making best use of it that gives rise to a successful individual.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
I would say that use the experience at Leeds to not only learn your subject but work on shaping your personality in line with where you see yourself in the future. The soft skills you pick up at university will largely influence how you make use of opportunities in life. Make use of the library and resource groups, take part in student societies and cultural events, and get out of your comfort zone. It is for certain that Leeds will bring to you opportunities of a lifetime.

From an advertiser who thought that was all that marketing had to offer, I have now broadened my horizon to become a market entry/expansion expert in Asia. I created an avenue for myself that was unique rather than just fitting in. Being an Indian in UK is my biggest advantage as I helped two British brands (luxury and sports nutrition) enter the Asian markets and excel because of my knowledge of local customers and their behaviour. And I believe that unique expertise and support from my peers has helped me jump from a junior role to become Head of Asia in my current job.

Apart from the exceptional teaching and seminars, I believe for me it was also the cultural diversity. We were lucky to be in a batch that was led by a Sri Lankan, and we had professors from Iran, India, Sri Lanka, Germany and Italy. It was extremely reassuring to see that no matter where you came from, opportunities were present for everyone.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
If you aspire to work internationally, be proud to be different and use that to your advantage. It's simple, if you want to work for UK and you are not from here, as a marketeer, locals have an advantage because they know the consumer and culture behaviour far better. What you bring to the table needs to be laid out specifically in your interviews, networking and resume. And whilst studying, it is human nature to mingle with people we are comfortable with, especially in a foreign environment, but please break away from that. Make international friends, have international food, and talk about cultures. Four years later, I still live with my mate from Leeds. Who knew that a Japanese and an Indian would become friends for life in UK? Embrace it all.

As someone who had largely been a part of the rigid and conventional Indian education system, I found studying at Leeds extremely liberating. Leeds helped me appreciate my own rigour in how I study and the inspiring faculty helped me find my writerly voice.

Being a highway engineer and working in the transport sector allows me to be part of teams working on the design of major infrastructure projects such as HS2, as well as small community projects such as Low Traffic Street. This variety of projects made me realize how important my role is in safeguarding a sustainable future along with ensuring the safety of users. I’m proud of the fact that the highway/public realm designs I create let people enjoy public spaces efficiently and more safely with their loved ones. This helps us to develop a thriving and bustling area which has economic stability.

Studying at the Institute of Transport Studies, Leeds helped me deepen my understanding of the transport sector in the UK and worldwide. Most of the people in the industry recognize the Institute of Transport Studies as a brand, and this reputation helps in gaining a foothold and comes with an expectation of high performance. The knowledge that I gained at Leeds helped me develop my point of view towards problems that the transport industry is facing, mainly around sustainability. It made me aware of my role in fighting climate change and gave direction to my efforts and creativity.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
I would like to advise the prospective graduates to believe in their ideas and potential. Coming to a different country and studying does present some challenges but at the University of Leeds, you can get all the guidance starting from how to secure decent accommodation to mock interviews and CV reviews. I would like to advise them to make use of those facilities as much as possible. And last but not the least, keep your mind open to every opportunity and being proactive as that will help them in achieving their long-term aspiration.

I was 18 when I came into Leeds, and the first in three generations in my family to have come overseas to study. My time at Leeds was a defining moment in my life - from learning basics such as writing a cheque (embarrassing but true!) budgeting, cooking, cleaning, laundry to more fundamental life skills. Leeds was the foundation to understanding how to stay true to myself. In hindsight, the course at Leeds highlighted to me what I was good at!

Upon completing my degree, I took a gap year to pursue my love for travel writing. Along with my partner, we established a location-independent business and went on to win several awards by esteemed publications such as Outlook Travel and Travel & Leisure for our work in the travel blogosphere. I harnessed my social media presence to fulfil a long dream - to build schools and computer labs to spread digital education in rural India. This year I released a best-selling book, published by Harper Collins, on content creation and digital entrepreneurship. I owe a large part of this journey to the time I spent at University of Leeds, where I made friends from all over the world and got the confidence to take that leap of faith.

I was always an academic kid, not afraid to put in as much work as I possibly could to achieve my dreams. That was how I ended up applying for a PhD in English Literature & Visual Arts at Leeds. During my very first conversations with faculty members over emails, I knew this was where I wanted to study. They encouraged my cross-disciplinary research and upon seeing the quality of my work, pushed me to apply for several scholarships as I could not finance my degree. The experience on campus was no different - I was determined to work hard & complete my thesis in record time. But being on campus exposed me to a cosmopolitan perspective and made me much more confident to pursue dreams that I had put on the back burner.

I am proud of establishing myself in my niche, and thrilled that I recently facilitated a dream career change into management consulting off the back of the broad expertise I have built in talent management, performance management, psychometrics and organisational development. When I returned to the UK five years ago as a relatively recent graduate with two years' experience I felt desperate for an opportunity to prove my worth and abilities. That hunger has never left me and I am proud that it drives me onwards and upwards.

Studying at Leeds gave me the skills to produce rigorous, evidence-based, high quality work in my field. My degree trained me in critical thinking and gave me a great foundational understanding of the subject. The MSc gave me unique insight into industry best practice in my field and gave me a practical corporate network. It also taught me how to thrive in and leverage an international community.

When I came back from the UK, I was appalled at the stark divisions of poverty and wealth in my home area in East Kolkata between rich and poor. My primary vision was to integrate poorer children into mainstream society through modern English medium education. I began work immediately and by the end of 2015, I had built a school with modern amenities and infrastructure. To mobilize the community, I arranged free counselling sessions and child health camps. I introduced many schemes of scholarships for students who could not afford to pay any fees. The school has succeeded in enrolling over 400 girls and 600 boys, most of whom are first generation in their families to achieve literacy.

My time in the UK helped me understand the need for basic facilities across class, gender and ethnicity. It inspired me in my vision to remove inequality in access to education by educating the vulnerable children of my home area. The teaching method, curriculum and the faculty of Leeds acted as a benchmark for me in my own pursuit of educating children. The research training I had received in the UK, helped me in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data relating to my survey on the literacy of children of my home area. The welcoming multicultural and interactive academic environment of studying in the UK helped me develop broader perspective and new insights about the world at large.
What words of advice would you share with other students and graduates wishing to pursue a similar career?
As a Leeds mentor I have mentored three students on their career choices and future opportunities. It is important that students make use of the opportunities that the UK has to offer and learn new skills. The experiences they gather from participating in different societies can shape their thoughts for future career decisions.

My degree at Leeds was much more than I imagined. It was a practice-based approach to learning through insightful real-world study and analysis. I had the opportunities to learn, interact and improvise with leaders from the field of finance, professors and lecturers, who still had active careers in their areas of expertise often as senior advisors and consultants. I had classmates from different countries all across the world, who had different perspectives and often experience in the real world to draw from.
